Fu Xiang Maynard ‘20 has been selected as the recipient of the 2019 National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) Chinese Summer Program scholarship and will study Mandarin in Xiamen, China this summer.

The highly competitively, merit-based scholarship comes after a rigorous application process that included a semi-finalist interview this past October.

“It says a lot that our students are seizing opportunities to enhance their Mandarin learning experience and also being selected for those opportunities,” said Mandarin Middle and Upper School Teacher Ping Wu. “I have witnessed the dedication that Fu Xiang has to her Mandarin studies, and I couldn’t be more proud to see her commitment beyond the classroom.”

NSLI-Y is a U.S. Department of State program that provides merit-based scholarships for eligible high school students and recent high school graduates to learn less commonly taught languages in summer and academic-year overseas immersion programs.
