Karen is the music teacher for the PYC and if you visit, you may see her in the studio engaged in joyous work with girls: singing, folk dancing, playing instruments and creating new ideas! The intersection of story, music and movement is a powerful place for musical learning to unfold.  Through these three elements, girls initiate and develop original creations as well as learn traditional songs and dances. Actively continuing her Orff Schulwerk education, Karen regularly attends both national and local conferences. When not in the studio teaching music, Karen is a collaborating teacher in the PYC classrooms, supporting the girls' project and literacy work. She is also the resident zookeeper and uses classroom pets as a vehicle to facilitate learning and empathy.  In addition, Karen works with girls in the PYC garden to grow delicious vegetables and flowers!

Karen began her career teaching environmental education in Maine and Ohio. Streams, woods, fields, marshes, rock climbing, rappelling and canoeing were Karen's "subjects". In the early 1990s, Karen was the environmental education coordinator for the Franklin Soil and Water Conservation District, where she presented teacher workshops and school programs. Through an OEEF grant that she wrote, Karen was instrumental in helping Hilliard City Schools implement a Big Darby Creek stream quality monitoring program. Karen’s life has also included staying at home for seven years with her children, Robin (CSG class of 2012) and Ben.
