Form VI students visit Hoover Park YMCA Community Garden
Posted September 21, 2012
On Thursday, September 13 girls in Form VI participated in a service learning field trip at the Hoover Park YMCA Community Garden. The girls harvested dozens of tomatoes and string beans, cleared corn stalks, planted buckwheat and oats for ground cover, and planted kale and collard greens. The garden staff shared their knowledge about growing crops, bugs, composting, use of tools, harvesting techniques, and the role of a community garden. Another team cleared the entire park of litter! The girls and faculty enjoyed a picnic lunch and time on the playground as well.
This field trip is the first of many service learning opportunities that will be available to the girls this year. Chris Smithies and members of the Middle School Faculty are developing a curricular approach to service learning so that the volunteer work and education are seamless in the overall experience girls have at Columbus School for Girls.
