Form V Book Club Meets to Discuss Dead End in Norvelt by Jack Gantos
Posted September 11, 2012
September 5 marked the beginning of a new venture in the Power Library, the Form V book club, which meets the first Wednesday of the month from 10:45 - 11:45 a.m. During the first meeting, twenty Form V students revisited the summer reading title, Dead End In Norvelt, sharing summer experiences such as a trip to the real town of Norvelt, a meeting with the author, and biographical facts discovered about Jack Gantos (yes, he went to jail for a foolish juvenile escapade, ask your daughters about this!)
Form V girls met in the library and walked down to get lunch from the Ruch Dining Hall. From those who volunteered, two names were selected from a hat to lead the next meeting. Joanna Howson and Aubrey Lanham will be the October leaders. They will share the title of their book selection by posting it on the Form V bulletin board by Thursday, September 13, and make up discussion questions for the next meeting on Wednesday, October 3. Currently, we are focusing on the rich literature of the Newbery Honor and Award winners. Future titles need to be offered at the Association of Library Service to Children website, and be available in paperback. Four copies will be purchased to circulate among the students, and others will need to procure their titles from the library or purchase them. We are looking forward to a wonderful year watching the girls grow as leaders and readers! Photos from the Book Club are available online.
