CSG Students Recognized in 2012 AAPT High School Physics Photo Contest

Two Columbus School for Girls students, Angela Mentel, '12 and Lauren Gerber, ’12, were recognized as having one of the top 100 photos in the 2012 American Association of Physics Teachers' High School Physics Photo Contest. The pictures were chosen from over 1200 entries from all over the world. The top 100 photos will be displayed at the 2012 AAPT Summer Meeting in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where the attendees will vote to determine the ultimate winners. This picture demonstrates the concept of reflection from a convex mirror. In this case, the mirror is a blue glass lawn ornament. Reflected in the sphere is my aunt’s house on a snowy Thanksgiving Day. In a convex mirror, the objects in the ball are upright and have a magnification less than one, which means that the sized is reduced. The rounded sides also make the objects on the edge look distorted. Although the ball makes a cool lawn ornament, it can also create beautiful images.
