Curriculum Overview

The Lower School encourages students, parents, and teachers to embrace the learning process. It is a lively community where curiosity, courage, adventure, and risk taking are fostered within young girls.

The dedicated teachers offer challenging academics in a supportive atmosphere in their students’ intellectual, emotional, social and physical development. The Lower School curriculum is created around interdisciplinary themes which enable teachers to provide authentic, hands-on experiences centering in the homeroom social studies course but that extends into the technology, music, art, library, Spanish, and science classes. This thematic curriculum gives learning a context and encourages girls to engage in both independent and collaborative exploration. Students become the "experts" in their unit of study as they utilize a myriad of resources to research the topic being studied.

In the Lower School, it is understood that utilizing varied forms of technology is critical to becoming a 21st century global citizen. Technology is deeply embedded in most classroom assignments and projects. Experiences in visual, performing arts and music also enrich and enliven daily experiences. Physical education is offered all year and incorporates swimming as one quarter of study, as well as health and well being skills.

Parents work in partnership with us in shaping their daughters’ experiences. They are an integral part of our work, often volunteering their time and expertise to extend classroom experiences in a unique way. Learning extends beyond the school day through innovative and invigorating courses offered in the After Hours Program.
