Frequently Asked Questions

Q

What is the purpose of annual giving?

A

Annual Giving is designed to bridge the gap between tuition totals and the actual cost of operating the school.

Q

What is the mission of CSG?

A

The mission of CSG is to provide an outstanding educational experience to its students. To accomplish this end, CSG must be financially responsible.

Q

What kind of expenses does annual giving help cover?

A

Instructional and administrative expenses make up almost the entire operating budget at CSG. These include teachers' salaries, student publications and activities, interscholastic sports, educational supplies, computer maintenance and supplies, textbooks, library and audiovisual supplies, utilities, postage, telephone, as well as building maintenance. Employee benefits and physical plant expenses complete the operating budgets.

Q

Does annual giving support financial aid?

A

Financial aid is supported by interest from the endowment and by the proceeds from JUBILEE! A donor may restrict a gift for financial aid use.

Q

How much per pupil does annual giving need to raise to bridge the gap between tuition and the actual cost of educating each student?

A

The gap breaks down to $2,500 per student. Each student's education is underwritten by $1,000 from Endowment income and $1,500 is needed in gifts to Annual Giving from the CSG family and organizations in order to balance the operating budget.

Annual Giving

A letter from the Annual Giving Chair

Dear CSG Family:

CraneFamilysmall.jpg Jamie Crane, Hailey Miller '13, and Tim Miller

It seems like just yesterday our daughter, Hailey, was beginning her CSG journey. Now, years later, she is entering her senior year. She traded in tunics for skirts long ago, and her morning ride to school with Dad has become her daily commute by herself. Casual shopping for pretty dresses for school dances has turned to relentless searching for the perfect elegant gown to wear to Commencement. This fall her most important essays will be meant for college admissions officers, not her classroom teachers. And when summer turns to fall, Hailey and her classmates will gather together one last official time to bond and lead the school through the 2012-2013 academic year. Who knew it would go so fast?

Over the years I have constantly marveled at the education my daughter has received at CSG. And though I have found it to be nothing short of incredible, I believe it is only when your daughter becomes a senior and the finished product comes into sharp focus that the true genius of CSG is revealed. She has become an amazing young woman, and as much as her parents would like to take full credit, her remarkable transformation would not have been the same without her CSG family. My daughter and her classmates have received a world-class education that is second to none, and it clearly shows.

What I have also learned over the years is that CSG’s Annual Giving campaign plays no small part in enabling the school to provide a superb education for our girls. It is the proverbial academic hot fudge, whip cream, nuts and cherries that make the CSG sundae such a unique and special learning experience. Whether it’s aiding the robotics team, funding the purchase of an ultra modern white board for another class or helping to bring in a world class author to speak, CSG’s Annual Giving makes so many learning opportunities possible.

I, along with my Annual Giving Co-Chair, Pat Giller, whose daughters, Jessica (IX) and Leah (IV), are midstream in their CSG careers, ask and urge you to generously support this year’s Annual Giving campaign. In considering your gift, as always, please remember this – AT CSG IT’S ALL ABOUT THE GIRLS!

Thank you,

A letter from the Annual Giving Grandparents Representatives

MartinGP.jpg Patsy and Woods Martin and granddaughters, Madeleine Livingston '12 and Clara Livingston '19

From the first secure steps of our PYC student, ready to sing “Over the river and through the woods,” to the last walk through the laurel leaves in June, we watched our granddaughter Madeleine become the confident young woman that we expect of the CSG graduate. And now we have the joy of experiencing our granddaughter Clara making the same journey.

Our Houston home is 1200 miles from Broad Street, and the CSG calendar has always been a vital part of planning our family visits. We remember with pride being introduced as “Mystery Readers” to the uplifted faces of the PYC girls, eager to hear what story we would bring. On Grandparents Day in the Lower School we met teachers, reviewed notebooks and projects and proudly posed for pictures. We clapped with enthusiasm at Middle School plays and marveled at the award winning Upper School choral and instrumental presentations.

Our lives have been greatly enriched, and the bonds to our own family as well as the CSG family have been strengthened by these shared experiences. Perhaps these accounts of our visits to Broad Street have rekindled similar memories of your own. We hope that you too cherish your participation in the events of your granddaughters’ lives at CSG.

We have observed how CSG educates the whole child. Each girl is encouraged to develop her unique talents, to exercise critical thinking and to explore new disciplines in preparation for the global world in which we live. CSG girls are taught to care for themselves, for those around them and for the ever-changing world.

It is in this spirit that we ask you to join us in support of the Columbus School for Girls Annual Giving Campaign. Annual Giving helps meet the cost of providing the education that our granddaughters receive, an education that will enable them to become independent young women, leading lives that reflect the spirit that has guided CSG for over 100 years.

Sincerely,

Patsy Woods Sig-1.jpg
