The Arts

The Fine and Performing Arts Department at Columbus School for Girls encourages the total development of each student by offering opportunities for unique talents to emerge and flourish.

Arts Curriculum

Creative exploration for discovery through a variety of art disciplines is required through Form VIII, and 1.5 credit hours at the Upper School level are required for graduation.

Each of the disciplines — Music, Visual Arts, and Theater — is consistent with the school mission and philosophy and its unique contribution to the range of educational choices. By assisting students to achieve a degree of artistic competence and aesthetic appreciation, the arts deepen their understandings of human interactions and emotion.

The arts empower students to freely express themselves and enjoy the inner satisfaction of accomplishment. They provide balance and release in students lives. They neatly integrate into and enhance other areas of academic study.

The department stands united in its vision of arts education, not as a tool, project, or activity, but as a discipline of excellence and respect, as exemplifed by the annual Lower School Evening of Art and Music.
